The Niners were able to complete a trade with the Carolina Panthers to acquire ,
great running back Christian McCaffery as they pursued a Super Bowl victory.
McCaffery had been a fan favorite with the Panthers for five and a half years,
even though he was there at a challenging time in the team's cycle and only made the playoffs once.
He did not, however, depart on the best of terms, praising the Niners in a way that implied they were a more reliable group than Carolina.
The move, according to McCaffery, was the "best thing that ever happened" to him at the time.
